Possible Damages after Hurricanes
First, you should make sure that you have enough insurance to cover damages. You should ascertain the value of your home and adjust your home insurance coverage accordingly.
Preventive Maintenance for Hurricanes
Second, you should perform some preventive maintenance. Make sure that your roof is intact and repaired. If you have any trees that overhang your house, cut back the branches. If your doors or windows have any leaks, plug them. Make sure that your gutters are cleaned.
Third, if a hurricane is headed your way, secure anything in the yard that might be picked up by heavy winds and become a missile. This includes the barbecue grill, loose toys, and lawn ornaments.
Waterproof Container Against Hurricanes
Fourth, make sure that all your important documents are in a waterproof container and are in a secure, dry place.
Fifth, make sure that your car is filled with gasoline in case you must evacuate. Have a go bag filled with supplies such as food, water, and extra clothes. Plan where to go and a route to get there, whether it’s a friend’s or relative’s home or a shelter. If you must ride the storm out at home, make sure that you have enough supplies in case of a long-term power outage, including food that doesn’t need refrigeration.
Last, make sure that your cell phone is fully charged. Consider investing in a car charger. Make sure that you have the insurance claims number on speed dial. One of the first things you should do after a storm is to call the insurance claims adjuster. He or she will be able to ascertain the damage your home has sustained and get you on a quick road to recovery.
