The best way to deal with a house fire is to prevent one from starting. Here are a few sensible steps.
Make sure that anything flammable is kept away from your stovetop. When cooking, do not leave the stove unattended. Clean your cooktop of grease or spilled oil before and after every time you cook something.
Fireplace
If you have a fireplace, make sure that anything flammable is kept away from it. When you have a fire going, make certain that it is not attended. If you are using candles, whether during a romantic dinner or during a power blackout, do not leave them unattended. Consider using flameless electric candles that run on batteries.
When renovating your home, such as replacing a roof, use fireproof or fire-resistant materials.
Ensure that the vents and filters are cleaned of lint in your clothes dryer.
Smoking
Do not smoke without an ashtray readily available. Consider going outside to smoke. (Of course, for health as well as fire prevention reasons, it is best to not smoke.)
Keep the immediate exterior of your home clean of foliage and flammable debris. You should especially keep any overhanging trees trimmed back.
Be careful about storing flammable material such as fertilizer or motor oil in the garage. Make certain they are in secure, flame-proof containers.
Check your appliances and home electronics and make certain they don’t have frayed power lines.
Smoke Detectors
Make sure that your smoke detectors are operational and have charged batteries. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher readily available and know how to use it.
In case you have a house fire, have an escape plan and practice it at least twice a year. Make sure that you and your family have easy ways of egress.
Make certain that your home insurance is current and is enough to repair the damage that a house fire can inflict on your home should the worst happen.
