Is There A Difference Between Street Legal Golf Carts and Regular Golf Carts?
Golf carts are popular and convenient ways to travel around and about Florida communities. Choosing the right golf cart for you requires a better understanding of the difference between a regular golf cart and a street legal one.
Regular Golf Carts
Florida law defines golf carts as, “a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour.” Regular golf carts do not require a driver’s license, registration, or insurance, however, their use is highly restricted, making them an inconvenient mode of transportation.
Street Legal Golf Carts
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) classifies street legal golf carts as Low-Speed Vehicles (LSV). While it is permissible to convert a regular golf cart to a street legal golf cart, there are 2 key factors to keep in mind:
Buyer Beware—The registration and title date of a converted golf cart reflect those specific dates and not the date the cart was manufactured. What that means for you, the buyer is that the cart might actually be older than the listed title date.
How to Title and Register Your Converted Cart—In order to title and register your converted golf cart, you must trailer it to a Florida Motorist Services Registration Office. Upon passing inspection, the office will assign the cart a VIN. To complete the title and registration process, it is necessary that you take any and all required paperwork.
Insurance is Required
Whether you choose a converted golf cart or a brand new one, you must purchase insurance. Florida law requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL) for street legal golf carts. Those operating a cart must have a valid driver’s license and obey all laws.
