If there’s one thing you can count on in the summer, it’s some intense rainstorms. Here in Florida, we get our share of sun and heat, and then some afternoon thunderstorms often sweep through and provide some variety. If you happen to be out driving during one of these downpours, then you know it can be a stressful ride. To avoid an automobile insurance claim, keep these tips in mind the next time you’re behind the wheel during one of our summer storms.
Turn on your low-beam headlights to make sure other drivers can see you
Have daytime running lights? That doesn’t help drivers behind you, so flip on those lights.
Slow down During Rainstorm
This is the biggest tip to avoid an accident. Going slower allows you more time to see potential problems and react appropriately.
Keep an eye on cars ahead of you
They provide clues for issues such as puddling on the road (you’ll see the spray from their tires) or flooding (brake lights).
If you experience hydroplaning, hold on to the wheel and take your foot off the gas until you re-gain traction
When your wheels aren’t contacting the road, the best thing you can do is stay in control and don’t panic.
Don’t drive through standing water
It’s impossible to know how deep the water is and the road could be washed out underneath. Turn around and find a different route.
Test your brakes after driving through a lot of rain
Sometimes water saturates the brakes, making them less effective. Giving them a quick pump every once in a while, will not only help dry them off but give you a report on how well they are functioning.
Increase following distance During Rainstorm
Back off a little bit from the vehicles in front of you. You’ll be able to see better plus it will give you more time to react to a situation.
Pull over if visibility is severely compromised
Find a safe place to wait out the storm. They usually don’t last for very long, and it shouldn’t be important to arrive at your destination a few minutes late. If you know there’s a chance of storms, allow yourself extra time so you’re not feeling rushed.
Finally
We don’t have to deal with snow and ice down here, but sometimes a summer downpour can challenge driving skills just as much as a winter storm. If you’re caught in a rainstorm, use these tips to ensure you arrive at your destination without incident. For more safe driving tips, contact us.
