There is a reason some insurance companies offer reduced auto insurance rates for those that they determine to be safe, responsible drivers. Whether you have had several accidents, or your driving record remains accident-free, it is always good to be reminded of steps you can take to be safe when you get behind the wheel of your vehicle.

Avoid Distractions
Being a responsible citizen involves looking out for the good of others. So, too, being a responsible driver involves looking out for yourself, any passengers you may have in your vehicle, pedestrians, and other drivers. Since distracted driving can increase the chance of you having an accident, one of the ways you can keep both others and you safe is by disciplining yourself to focus on your driving and only on your driving when you get behind the wheel.
We want to answer the text or read the email that just came up on our phone. We want to eat, apply makeup, fiddle with the radio, or drive with our dog in our lap. Friends, these things create distractions. Avoid the distractions, and you may not only save lives, but you may avoid having to make costly auto insurance claims.
Keep and Eye on the Skies
Although visitors think of sunshine when they think of our state, Florida residents know that afternoon thunderstorms pop up quickly, and occur daily. The rain and lightning pose a threat to drivers; severe weather conditions are difficult for motorists to navigate. Additionally, power outages make a difficult driving scenario even more hazardous.
Although these power outages are brief when they do occur, they can have a detrimental effect on traffic patterns because of interference with stoplight and street light operation. Keep your eyes on the skies when driving in Florida and be prepared to adjust your schedule accordingly.
Avoid Unhealthy Influences
Thanks to groups like MADD and the Ad Council, most Americans understand the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. Consider, however, the effect any prescription medications may have upon your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. Consult your healthcare professional about any pharmaceuticals you may have been prescribed, and about how taking them in combination with any other prescriptions may affect your judgement.
Be Aware of Situations and Extenuating Circumstances
No two driving scenarios will ever be exactly the same. You can help protect your safe driving record by being constantly aware of the circumstances around you. While your drive to work today may be effortless, it will not always be that way. As we head into fall, students across America are gearing up to head back to school, which means teachers are busily preparing their classrooms, and moms and dads everywhere are looking forward to soon being able to run errands sans kids.
If your children are grown and gone, the first day of school may not even be on your radar, however, if you drive, it should be! Consider how the first day of school in your county will affect your commute. Allow yourself extra time to get wherever you need to go on the opening day of the school year. Be ready to stop for school buses and be patient with both parents and children as they navigate their neighborhood bus stop. Always follow the directions of crossing guards.
Have Appropriate Insurance Coverage
Just like every homeowner is responsible for his home and property, it is the duty of every driver to be responsible every time he or she gets behind the wheel. Being a safe, responsible driver does not guarantee that an accident will never occur, which is why it is imperative that every driver carry the proper amount of auto insurance coverage.
