High school and college students aren’t known for having a lot of money. To get by on your limited budget, it makes sense to look for discounts wherever possible. If you do well in school, you may qualify for an automobile insurance discount. This is because insurance providers want to reward young people for showing initiative and responsibility. Those who take their studies seriously in high school or college are more likely to drive responsibly as well. However, you must ask for the discount because insurance companies don’t automatically provide it to you.
Qualifications Required for a Good Student Discount
While all my clients have slightly different requirements to receive a discount for good grades, the following eligibility factors are common:
- You are a legally licensed driver under age 25.
- You are a full-time student at a local high school, college, or university.
- You consistently maintain at least a 3.0 average. For schools that don’t have this grading system, you can show that you are on the honor roll or Dean’s List.
Homeschooled students may qualify for the good student discount, but they must have some way to prove their academic success. One possibility is to show the insurance agent your SAT or ACT score. If you are in college or attend a traditional high school, a report card or a letter signed by a school administrator is usually sufficient to prove your grades. Keep in mind that most insurers require you to submit proof of your good student status every time your policy is up for renewal.
