If you’re going away for summer vacation, or a vacation or extended trip at any other time, it’s important to make sure your home is secure. No one wants to risk a break-in. Thieves can damage your home, steal your valuable property, and make you feel fearful in the place that should make you feel secure. In addition, of course, your home insurance rates will rise if you are subject to a break-in.

Fortunately, there are many ways to make your home secure when you’re away.

Lock the Doors and Secure the Keys

Make sure you lock every door before you leave. That’s obvious, of course, but it’s all too easy to become harried and/or excited before a trip. Before you know it, you’ve forgotten to lock the back door that the family never uses. Make a point of locking every door.

Leave the duplicate keys in a secure location. The best idea is to leave them with family or friends. Do not leave them outside under a potted plant or doormat. People who commit burglaries will look in places like that.

Make your Home Look Inhabited

Thieves are very canny at detecting signs of a home that no one has been in for a few days or longer. They will notice a pileup of mail or packages, or that lights don’t come on at night, or that blinds are never drawn.

To avoid them knowing, make sure none of those things happen. Either have mail and other deliveries held until your return, or ask friends and family members to pick them up. Smart devices can easily program your lights to come on at staggered times. Friends or family members can draw your blinds when they drop by for the mail (or to water your plants).
