Many people have had the following experience. They leave work or some other place, walk to where they think they’ve parked their car, and don’t find it where they thought they parked it. What do you do when this happens?
First, make sure you didn’t park your car somewhere else. Often, you will find it one or so rows over or, when in a parking garage, on another level.
Having determined that your car is missing, the next step is to call the police impound lot just in case your car has been towed for any reason. Taking this step may save you some time and paperwork.
If your car has not been towed, then you call the police to report that your car has been lost or stolen. Be sure to tell law enforcement the make, model, color, and year of your vehicle. You should also tell them the VIN number, which you should have written down and stored in your wallet. If you have OnStar or Lojack (a good investment, by the way) give the police that information, as well.
The next step is to call your insurance company. If you are only carrying liability insurance there is not much the company can do. However, if you have a comprehensive insurance policy, then you are likely covered if your vehicle is never recovered or if it is found with damage.
You can reduce the likelihood of your car being stolen in several ways. Always lock your doors, and roll up your windows. If possible, park in a well-lit place in full view of security cameras. Keep as few valuables as possible in your vehicle, especially your wallet, purse, or important documents. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to your vehicle.
