One of the most stressful experiences you can have is being in an auto accident. A car crash can be a health-threatening, even life-threatening experience. Even if you and your passengers come out of the experience unscathed, you now have the problem of a vehicle that has been damaged and needs fixing.
What do you do?
After exchanging information with the other party and the police, you need to get your vehicle to a repair shop for evaluation. You should also contact your insurance company. Generally, an adjuster will be sent out to evaluate the damage to the car and draw up an estimate of how much it will cost to repair. Some insurance companies have a list of repair shops that they recommend and work with, and you should consider taking your vehicle to one of those.
You should never assume that your vehicle is drivable, even if it seems to have just superficial damage such as dings or dents. A car crash will apply a tremendous amount of force that can cause hidden damage to the frame and the undercarriage that could make your vehicle dangerous to drive. You should seriously consider calling for a tow even if you think you can drive away from the scene of the accident.
Incidentally, you should consider joining at auto club such as AAA. The yearly fee may seem steep, but it will likely pay for itself the very first time you need a tow.
After getting an estimate for a repair that everyone agrees with, you should arrange for alternate transportation. A rented car is probably your best bet. Your insurance company can help you get a good deal and will help pay for it if your policy covers the cost.
Especially if your vehicle is brand new, you should fully insure it with collision insurance. A car crash can cost many thousands of dollars and is certainly not a burden you need to risk bearing alone.
