People commonly assume that northerners face the most difficult driving conditions because they experience snowy and icy roads. While it can be challenging driving in those conditions, the Federal Highway Administration statistics show that more than double the number of crashes occur in the rain each year (~595,000 in rain vs ~211,000 in snow). In addition, the number of injuries is over 4 times as high for crashes that occur in the rain than crashes that occur in the snow. Therefore it is important for Florida drivers to proceed with caution when driving on wet roads. Consider the follow automobile insurance tips for driving in the rain.
Pay Attention to Visibility
Visibility is significantly reduced in rainy conditions. During the day, the clouds obviously reduce the sunlight. At night glare from the headlights reflecting in the water reduces visibility. Wiper blades clear the window but between passes it may be difficult to see through the blurry windshield. Since visibility is reduced it is necessary to slow down. You may have difficulty seeing the road ahead and other vehicles. If the rain is heavy and the windshield wipers can’t keep up consider pulling over to the side of the road and waiting until the rain has subsided.
Be sure to turn on your own headlights so other vehicles can see you. This will also help you see the road ahead, other vehicles and pedestrians.
Avoid Puddles
It can be difficult to determine how deep a puddle is so it is best to avoid large puddles completely. Since you aren’t sure what the depth is you don’t want to risk getting stuck. Steer around any puddles that are flooding the road.
Road Conditions Impact Driving
Understanding how wet roads impact driving is important. A film of water develops on the road and affects how your tires perform. Traction will be reduced which makes it more likely you will hydroplane. In addition any grease an oil on the road will increase the slickness. Braking distance will be longer so make sure you leave plenty of space between vehicles. Again, slowing down will help prevent a crash.
Taking the above precautions will help ensure you make it to your destination without an accident. Give yourself extra time to get where you are going. If your windshield wipers are not adequately clearing the rain consider replacing them with new wipers. The plastic degrades over time and many people find replacing their wipers once or twice a year is beneficial.
