It pays to do your homework when it comes to purchasing automobile insurance, especially if you have recently become a senior citizen. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than thirty-three million Americans over age 65 held a driver’s license in 2009. This figure is 25 percent more than it was just 10 years earlier. The unfortunate reality is that your risk of severe injury or death from a car accident increases as you age. The CDC reported 5,500 deaths and 183,000 injuries for people over age 65 in 2008. Car insurance rates reflect these statistics.
How to Reduce Your Insurance Risk
One of the first things I learned as a new agent is that insurance is all about managing risk. When you work with Oyer, Macoviak & Associates, I do everything I can to help you reduce your risk and therefore your insurance rates. The first thing I usually recommend to my older clients is to enroll in a defensive driving class. One valuable lesson you learn in the class is how to compensate for slowed reflexes that are a natural part of the aging process. You may qualify for a reduction in your insurance premium upon completion of the course.
Another way you may qualify for a discount is by cutting back on the number of miles you drive annually. If you have recently retired, you don’t drive anywhere near the number of miles you did while still working. You may also be more open to public transportation, particularly if you live in a senior building that offers this service to its residents. In either case, be sure to mention your reduced driving time to me prior to your next policy renewal date.
Open Lines of Communication
As a long-time insurance agent, I am proud of the personal relationships I have built with clients over the years. I get to know you personally so I can make the best possible recommendations.
