Automobile Insurance Coverage That is Required for Florida Drivers

Florida law requires anyone who registers a vehicle with four or more wheels to carry the state minimum for automobile insurance. The current state requirements include $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). The paragraphs below describe each type of coverage and how it protects you.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

The PIP portion of your Florida car insurance policy covers you up to the limits of that policy, regardless of who caused the accident. It may also cover passengers, children under the legal driving age, and other members of your household who do not have PIP coverage of their own.

Additionally, PIP provides financial protection for you if your child is injured on a school bus or you receive injuries as a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, a pedestrian, or a bike rider. If your passengers have their own PIP coverage, the cost of treating their injuries is covered by their own policy.

Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) is also covered under the PIP portion of your auto insurance. This pays for expenses related to the death or serious injury of another person in an accident you caused. If the family or injured person sues you, the BIL covers the costs up to the limits of your policy.

Property Damage Liability (PDL)

If you or a family member damage property in an accident, this portion of your policy pays for the damages. As with the other types, policy limits do apply.
